Arrogant Jerk Pat Robertson Wins My Evangelist Challenge

The moment I heard the terrible news about the earthquake in Haiti I wondered which of our world’s prominent Arrogant Jerk evangelists would be the first to claim the devastation was ‘wrought by God upon a deserving people’.

Congratulations Pat Robertson; you are an Arrogant Jerk of the Evangelical Kind for suggesting that the earthquake was sent by God. I am having a hard time comprehending why any deity would bring utter devastation to a people who are already struggling for life on a good day. I am so incensed by Pat Robertson’s comments on Haiti that I can barely contain myself. I am uncontrollably compelled to write this post against Past Robertson, an Arrogant Jerk who has time and again proven himself to be among our most Arrogant and vile examples of humanity.

To be honest, I was sure it would be Pat. He does not disappoint when it comes to pretending to know and talk to God and what ‘His’ supposed intentions are, especially when it comes to natural disasters. Yes, you can already find Brother Robertson in our Arrogant Jerk hall of fame for making similarly outrageous proclamations. He assured us that God would punish the North Eastern coast of the United States because we are so wicked (didn’t happen), warned us of giant storms (fizzled), and pretended to receive direct word from god that the destroying angels were on their way (must have taken a wrong turn).

So now, Pat Robertson gets an early lead on condemning the poor people of Haiti and not only implies that their lifestyle brought the wrath of God upon them, but Arrogantly asserts that he is privy to some fantastic deal with the devil. His flamboyance is astounding as he tells us that Haiti made a pact with The Devil to get away from France, and that The Devil agreed. “True Story” he says, ever so Arrogantly as if he were there as witness. What a Jerk.

Even more disgusting is his feigned sympathy for the people of Haiti at the end of this video clip. In unknowing self mockery, Pat explains in the attached video that the island of Hispaniola is divided in two, with prosperous Dominion Republic on the one side and the poor, condemned Haiti on the other. His obvious thesis; that Haiti is cursed, fails to comprehend a history of corrupt leadership and poor self government mired by devastating poverty. Haiti is almost wholly Christian, with over 80 percent of the country claiming to be Roman Catholic. Of the remaining 20 percent, over 15 percent claim to be Protestant. Judging by the pictures of people helping others, I am sure many of them would be considered good people by religious standards.

Tell me, Pat; why would God kick his own people while they’re down? Could it have something to do with that donation number you flash at the end of your exhibition? You Arrogant Jerk.

Epilogue

Pat Robertson appears to be cashing in on the tragedy of Haiti with Arrogant claims of ‘knowing God’s will’ and imposed doom from above on people who don’t live within his lifestyle constraints. I think this is terrible, as you can tell. Earthquakes are a common happening on our planet as a function of plate tectonics; our Earth’s crust is in motion, and occasionally it ’snaps’ as built up pressure exceeds structural resistance. This has been happening for billions of years. The ability to predict an earthquake is of no special condition because we can all be certain another one will happen at some point in the next hour or two. Yes; earthquakes happen somewhere on our planet almost continuously. While frequency is regular, magnitude is not so much. Most of the earthquakes we experience are so slight that we hardly notice at all. Occasionally, they are big. Big is predictable, to an extent, and not wholly unexpected, although exact timing is practically impossible to determine. Our planet is virtually covered with people. This fact, coupled with the understanding that earthquakes are happening all the time, means that someone, somewhere will experience an earthquake of some magnitude. When the magnitude is significant (above 4) bad things start to happen with our buildings. Throw all this into a blender and mix it up and you have an occasional and devastating convergence that is terrible. Haiti is the latest example, but won’t be the last. God has nothing to do with it.

Nevertheless; knowing this is a simple act of nature does not make it any easier to take. The people of Haiti have been hit hard, and it is truly terrible. I cannot find words to describe my heartache for them.

Nidal Malik Hasan is a Murdering Jerk

malik-nadal-hasan Nearly moved to tears tonight, I have torn myself away from the news to express my absolute disdain for U.S. soldier Nidal Malik Hasan. Hasan is an Arrogant Jerk of the worst kind for allowing his religion, poor judgment, poor performance and treasonous attitude to motivate him to commit outright murder of innocent people.

Tonight it is reported that he has survived a volley of returned fire and is laying in a hospital in Texas in stable condition. It is a shame that he will be provided some of the best medical care in the world to assure that he lives to see another day. If it were up to me, we would allow a few of his fellow soldiers in the room with nothing more than a carpenter’s toolkit and a few minutes of ‘alone time’. This Jerk doesn’t deserve to suck another ounce of our planet’s precious oxygen. Let’s get to it:

Frustrating beyond my ability to express is the news that this guy has already been investigated for making pro-terrorist comments while serving as a Major in the United States Army. You guessed it; he is a Muslim. He proudly displayed the name of Allah on his office door, and told a group of soldiers that strapping a bomb to your chest and blowing up a street full of women and children is ‘heroic’. The news media is tip-toeing around this fact like they’re dancing across a hot parking lot in bare feet. Perhaps they don’t want to be the ones to tip the wagon, but we all know what we’re all thinking: another Islamic extremist has done it again.

Gays in the military? Who cares; watch as the country turns their concern to the Muslims. After all, when was the last time a gay soldier went haywire and shot the place up? This won’t be good for Islam, and no doubt the nation will be watching for their universal condemnation.

Apparently Nidal Malik Hasan recently received a poor performance review, too. It is assumed that this may be one of the reasons that put him over the edge. As a major, a poor performance review would mean that he would be overlooked for future promotions. Not a good reason to go shooting up the place, if you ask me. In fact, I would submit that whoever gave him the poor review was probably right on the money; high performance soldiers do not turn on their own men and women.

Another fact to come out that is rubbing me raw is the news that he was the recipient of a full-ride scholarship. We even paid him while he went to school. He received a top-notch education and money in the bank from the military. When it came time to return the service to his country he flipped his lid and killed 12 patriots who were sworn to protect him under any and all circumstances. What an Arrogant Jerk!

I feel terrible for the 12 who were killed, and their families and friends. I have a daughter in the military and I know what it is like to have a child on base; there is a lot of worry and concern, but this is unexpected and tragic. You worry about accidents, you fend off thoughts of being called up, but all these are within the realm of expectation. To be murdered in cold blood by a superior officer is torment of the worst kind. I also feel sick for the wounded; these men and women have a tough road ahead of them; I hope they are all in good repair.

As for Nidal Hasan; I have not yet learned of the options that lay before him. Texas has the death penalty, of which he certainly qualifies for front row seating. I am not sure if this being a military incident has any effect on state law, or whether the military has their own way of dealing with these issues. Regardless, we can only hope that at some point someone will get medieval on his ass ala Marsalis Wallis.

Along with murder, Nidal Malik Hasan should be tried and convicted of treason. And for being an Arrogant Jerk of the worst kind. Hang him high.

Zero Tolerant Jerk

George J Goodwin Though I get a little busy these days and can’t always post my thoughts about the latest Arrogant Jerk, I just can’t let George J. Goodwin get the slip. This guy really takes the cake.

George Goodwin is apparently the superintendent at Lansingburgh Central School District where he has established a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to any type of weapon on the school grounds. And apparently no amount of reason or common sense will sway him. Here’s the story:

Seventeen year old Matthew Whalen, an Eagle Scout, high achiever, and recipient of the Life-Saving Heroism award from the Boy Scouts of America for giving CPR to his aunt and saving her life, answered honestly when he was asked if he had a knife locked safely in his car at the school. By all accounts, he said ‘yes’, apparently believing that the small knife, a part of his on-board survival mess kit was no matter.

Think again, Matthew; we live in trying times and that knife could have been used to threaten someone. Let’s not get all bogged down discussing the fact that the knife was locked away safely in his car, and wasn’t brought into the school or involved in any way with any act of violence. Matthew was suspended from school for 20 days. Sheesh!

Does George get all worked up over the idea that an average #2 pencil poses an equal threat? Or that a classroom chair could become a wieldy swinging object? Does the school’s Sanitation Engineer carry one of those putty knives they use to scrape gum off the floor? Watch out; Danger!

It makes me wonder how they handle teaching these kids skills that they can actually use in the world without giving them any potential weapons. A metal spatula in cooking class? A hammer in construction class? How about a needle in sewing? I have a notion that Goodwin has displaced these skill-based classes with more useful curriculum such as ‘Rock and Roll History’ (no kidding; offered at my local highschool. In my day we called it ‘listening to the radio’).

I read, too, that Matthew is concerned that his absence from school may spoil is excellent grades and potentially cause problems for his application to the military. I wonder if George is concerned that this young man’s own hands will become lethal weapons themselves after a rigorous Basic Training. This kid is an outstanding achiever with a plan for what to do when he graduates. An outstanding kid!

To add salt to the wound, Mr. Goodwin is apparently refusing to even talk with the young man about the incident. Probably because he knows that once a discussion is mounted that his ridiculous actions will expose him as an Arrogant Jerk.

Watch your back, George Goodwin; there could be a student with a rubber band in his trunk.

Flashback Nancy: Doubletalking Arrogance

Want to see something so amazing you will want to pull your hair out?

Just last week I recall reading a Nancy Pelosi op-ed in USA Today discussing the ‘un-American’-ness of protesters as they held their signs and shouted out their anger over Obama’s health care plan. She also mentions in this video that protesters are ‘carrying swastikas’ as if to discredit the hordes of town hall attendees with a yet-unconfirmed reference to what may have been a single person.

I don’t recall Nancy complaining when Bush was depicted as Hitler, complete with a swastika scrawled on his forehead. In fact, I have never seen so many swastikas on display as I did during the last four years of Bush’s presidency, and I was a punk rocker in the 80’s. Selective memory? How about ‘Arrogant Selective Memory’.

And as I suspected would happen eventually, this morning I browsed the news and found a collection of video clips wherein Nancy Pelosi expresses her love and appreciation for protesters and disruptors. In a sparkling moment of contradiction and self-condemnation, Nancy is seen praising and welcoming shouts, signs and disruption, and goes so far as to mockingly ‘appreciate’ that Bush is fighting for their right to do so.

Watch this amazing video of Nancy Pelosi, and see for yourself that she is an Arrogant partisan politician who fends only for her party, and not for the will of the people. She contradicts herself with the prevailing wind, and takes advantage of opportunities merely to promote herself. In just a few short years she seems to have forgotten that she was a defender of free speech and an advocate of opinionated outrage.

Now, it seems, she is above all that, and when people are outraged about what she wants to do, she assures us the very same behavior is ‘un-American’, and that the movement is ‘astro-turf’ (which is the new way to refer to a grass-roots movement that you think is organized and paid for by corporate deep pockets and shadowing conspiracies).

So, which is it, Nancy? Protesters practicing free speech or swastika-flaunting communist organizations bent on ruining our world? Whichever you say, we’ll just wait for the wind to change again to hear your next opinion.

Way to go, Nancy; you are still an Arrogant Jerk.

Boxed In By An Arrogant Jerk

While there have been many candidates for Arrogant Jerk over the last several month, I have laid low in hopes of letting the political wind settle a little before I start offending people again. It’s more fun to call out the Arrogant Jerks when tempers are not so hot, and the slightest critisism of someone’s favorite politician isn’t taken as a personal attack.

Nevertheless, Senator Barbara Boxer has slapped me awake with a move so Arrogant my head is still spinning. Here’s the story, as if you didn’t already know…

During public hearings on the restoration progress of our government effort to rebuild the New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina, Brigadier General Michael Walsh, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, had the gall, the audacity, the sheer imprudence to address our good senator as ‘ma’am’.

Barbara Boxer apparently considered this time-honored term of respect as something beneath her, and quickly interrupted the Brigadier General, saying (and I quote) “I’d a,.. You know; Could you say ’senator’ instead of ‘ma’am’? It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. So I’d appreciate it, yes, thank you.”

Her display of absolute Arrogance was amplified by the fact that she literally interrupted Mr. Walsh (I’m sure he won’t mind) mid-sentence as he attempted to answer her previous question. His reply after her Arrogant burst was simply ‘Yes Senator’. Having been chided by such Arrogance in front of he committee, and the entire country, I am sure the Brigadier General felt an avalanche of emotions yet remained calm and respectful. Such is the way of our highly trained and respectful armed services.

Apparently during all that hard work that Senator Boxer was enduring as she clawed her way to top public official, she forgot that she is an elected representative of the people, and left humility and respect back there on the campaign trail. Never once, I am sure, did she consider that the Brigadier General might too have worked and sacrificed to earn his position. It is a shame, and perhaps telling, that Senator Boxer felt the need to so Arrogantly remind us of her title; people who have to remind others of their ‘title’ are often the ones not deserving of it.

Boxer (I don’t care what her title is) reminds us, too, that we have allowed our senate to be overrun with multi-term power mongers who care less for the people they are serving and more for their political future as elite power players. She isn’t concerned about what is going on in Louisianan, nor does she care about how long things are taking. She just wants to display her might as someone in charge.

Unfortunately for her, this little outburst has exposed her as the one who thinks she is in charge, and thus probably the reason things aren’t getting done in the first place. I learned an important lesson while working for Microsoft; when something goes wrong, you don’t blame the vendors or the people in the trenches, you blame management.

Being in charge is fun, but it comes at the price of responsibility. You can belittle as many people as you want to, Senator, but in the end it only serves to show you are little more than an Arrogant Jerk.

Arrogant Somali Pirates

You can count me among those who were thrilled today at the news that the U.S. Navy removed three Somali pirates from the playing field.

somalipirates The story started a week or so ago when, yet again, Somali pirates took control of another unarmed cargo ship in order to wreak havok and demand ransom. The ship was flying under a U.S. flag and the American captain quickly, and bravely, traded his freedom for that of his crew. Safely away, the crew could only watch as lawless Somali pirates held their captain at gunpoint while the U.S. Navy made their way to the scene in remarkable time.

Fast forward to today, Easter Day, when the nation seemed to get a little excited as things quickly elevated in the news and word came that the Somalis were getting a little trigger happy. Apparently their was some pre-event gunfire and some threatening of the captured captain aboard a small lifeboat where they were holding him prisoner. Tied up, even.

Then, to the sound of cheers around my camp, the news reported that the Navy sniped the pirates with the precision of a surgeon and brought the high seas adventure to an immediate end. Three cheers to the Navy for showing those bastards who’s boss, and for not crumbling to their criminal demands.

And now, we get a major dose of Arrogant Jerk thrown in our face as every Somali pirate proclaims the United States as ‘the enemy’ for killing those thugs and resisting their demands. Never mind that they have killed before, and regularly climb aboard innocent, unarmed ships to take hostages and demand exorbitant ransoms. What a bunch of Arrogant Jerks.

This is evidence that we have gone too long without action; these Arrogant Jerks actually think the U.S. Navy were the bad guys in this situation. Really? I am appalled that people on this planet think this way; I climb aboard your ship, shoot the place up and tie everyone up in duct tape, then demand loads of money, and then think You are the Jerk when you protect yourself? Ridiculous.

These guys know the risks. Unfortunately they have always been paid their ransoms and no one has ever stood up to them. Now that someone has, they want to point fingers and shake their fists. Oh Brother.

What a bunch of Arrogant Jerks.

Arrogant Conspiracy Theory

I just can’t pass this one up…

I covered Arrogant Jerk Cynthia McKinney a while ago, and couldn’t help but notice she has popped up in the news again. This time for announcing the ridiculous claim that ‘The Government’ authorized the execution of 5,000 prisoners and dumped their bodies in the Louisiana swamp during hurricane Katrina.

Wow. The needle on my ridiculous-o-meter doesn’t have a setting for this level of ridiculousness.

McKinney is currently engaged in wasting her time campaigning for the presidency (Yes, the U.S. presidency) on the infamous Green Party ticket. I understand wasting time on a hobby (take this site, for example), but running for president? In her condition?

McKinney made her ridiculous claim at a news conference in Oakland, California. I would normally guess this was just a publicity stunt, but the subject is so embarrassing I have to assume her Arrogance has gotten the better of her.

According to news articles, she said she ‘heard it from a mother of a National Guard soldier’. Well, there is our first clue; any time you hear someone say they heard it from someone else, and then doesn’t bother to specifically name that someone else, it is probably not true.

Secondly, doesn’t it sound in-credible that The Government would choose the swamplands of Louisiana to dump the bodies? Why not just take them out to the middle of the ocean and feed ‘em to the fishes?

Thirdly; 5,000 missing people seems like an aweful big secret to keep. Did none of them have any kin to worry for them? Are we to assume that only a couple of Men in Black were privey to such a large undertaking? It takes a certain kind of mind to comprehend such a high degree of cooperation in such a highly controversial environment.

For these reasons, Cynthia McKinney gets a revisit to the top of Arrogant Jerk.

Such a Jerk, I Could Spit.

Popping up all over the web this week like so many kernels of overheated corn where revelations that Mark Spitz, the great American swimmer, was overheard saying that he could out swim Michael Phelps.

With all due respect for his Olympic achievements, Mark Spitz has crossed the line of reason and reveals himself as an Arrogant Jerk. Perhaps even a Jealous Arrogant Jerk. Let’s discuss…

In an interview with The Daily News, Mark Spitz was recorded saying that he thinks there is a common thread among people of greatness (not us), and that great people somehow know how to beat their competitors. Having said this, Spitz went on to proclaim (and I quote): “I’d know everything about how to beat Michael,… He’d also know everything to beat me. We’d have to tie.”

Mark Spitz was implying that he could go head to head with Phelps if they both competed ‘in their prime’. I am pretty sure that anyone who competes in an Olympic event is ‘in their prime’, and that the best Spitz could do was recorded during his swim in the 1972 Olympics when he won seven gold medals.

Likewise, I think it is fair to say that Phelps is in his top shape right now, at the end of his run for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Let’s compare…

Phelps has not only become world famous for smashing Spitz’s record for the total number of golden nuggets on his mantle, but he also set seven new world records in the process. The records smashed by Phelps were once held by Mark Spitz. If we match them both head to head we can clearly surmise that Phelps would take him. To be clear: Phelps squashed all the records that Spitz set. Handily.

I don’t think it matters one drop that Spitz thinks he would be all over Phelp’s psychology; I did a little side-by-side comparison for sheer muscle mass and Phelps compares to Spitz’s Olympic physique like The Hulk compares to Bruce Banner. It’s ridiculous.

So, my note to Mark Spitz: Give me a break. I appreciate that you were a hero those 20 years ago, but don’t go trying to take the spotlight from the new guy who just smashed your records and left them to dry with the chamois back there on the platform; the numbers won’t allow it and it makes you look like a whiner. You could not beat him, because you didn’t. We have the ability to compare your performance to Phelps’, microsecond for microsecond, and he just kicked your Arrogant Jerk keester.

You Don’t Know, But I Do…

This week Omar Sharif joins a list of Arrogant Actors who make millions in the United States, and then turn their venom on the American populace in wide, sweeping generalizations.

Apparently, the Middle East Media Research Institute had a word with Omar and learned that the United States is doomed to fail in Iraq because people like him ‘prefer to go to the neighborhood sheik’ instead of voting in a democratic process. Fine enough, and to each his own. If the people of Iraq would rather continue for another few thousand years in dogmatic servitude, that is fine with me. This is not really my point…

Later in the interview, Omar reportedly said ‘I lived in America for a long time. Only ten percent of all Americans have a passport. In other words; ninety percent of them never left America; they don’t know anything.’

Ahem: They don’t know anything?

I find this to be a remarkably Arrogant and Jerky thing to say. Let’s break it down…

For one, United States Americans live in a very big place. I think it is fair to say that we have members of our national populace who have traveled far and wide, and have learned much about many of the world’s beauty and wonder, without ever leaving our borders. Our nation holds a sample of every type of geography, and so many cultures and ideals it would be hard for one person to discover them all.

Interestingly, many of the comments on this page about passports were from Europeans who use their passports to visit the U.S.A. Can you really blame Americans for not needing to leave a place that most other people want to visit? Does anyone blame the Hawaiians for staying in Hawaii?

To say a person doesn’t know anything simply because he or she doesn’t have a passport is ridiculous. But lets press the issue…

I would find it hard to believe that more than ten or twenty percent of the people of Egypt have a passport. (For the record; Egypt is from whence Omar hails.) I know from personal experience that relatively few of the people of Australia have passports. And I also know that very few Mexicans, Central Americans, or even South Americans have passports. Actual statics are impossible to find on the Internet, but neither could I find any mention of someone calling these people stupid for it. I wouldn’t.

A high percentage of Europeans have passports for the simple reason that you can get to any number of adjacent countries by train in less time than it takes to commute to downtown Manhattan from New Jersey. But most of the world’s population live in places that are not immediately adjacent to another country, and therefore do not need a passport.

My point here? ‘Not having a passport’ is common, and in no way is connected with how smart you are. It is simply a matter of needing to go somewhere. Furthermore; I have met a good handful of people who have passports that couldn’t point out their destination on a globe if you gave them a hint. Seriously.

Finally, and the highest point of exposure for Omar’s Arrogant comment: It would be difficult, if not downright impossible, to determine the number of Americans holding a current passport. The number may exist somewhere, but it isn’t public.

I tried to find the number myself to research this rant, and could find only second-hand information about what percent of Americans hold passports. This guy has done some research, and found multiple stories from good sources claiming percentages from as low as 7% to as high as 25%. The numbers are varied, and even less reliable when you break them down between children and adults; it is proposed that over 34% of U.S. adults hold a passport. Not bad, but does that really tell us anything other than ‘a lot of people are traveling’? And does ‘traveling’ equal ‘knowing something’? No.

My four year old son has a passport. Do you think Omar Sharif is counting him as one of the ’smart ones’? My boy is pretty bright, but come on; he’s only four! And besides, even though he has held an active passport for three years, he has only used it once to travel into Canada. I doubt that added to his intelligence (he was only one year old), although he did get to see Niagara Falls from the good side.

Omar Sharif is an Arrogant Jerk for saying such a thing. He uses bad statistics to press a point that is simply ridiculous in its very nature. It would make as much sense to say that ‘All Egyptians are stupid because they live near sand’. Could that be true, too, Mr. Sharif? The answer is an obvious ‘no’.

Omar is accusing Americans of being limited in their view of the world, while he himself is demonstrating a very narrow view of Americans. He should be so wise; apparently he has a passport.

But as Omar Sharif clearly demonstrates; while holding a passport might make you smarter, it won’t stop you from being an Arrogant Jerk.

Disgusting Low Life Arrogant Jerk

From near the bottom of the dregs of society, Frank White of Dallas, Texas, proves to us that you don’t need to be a fat politician or snooty upper class citizen to be an Arrogant Jerk of the worst kind. Yes, Frank, you are a disgusting low life Arrogant Jerk.

Here’s the story…

Apparently, a young man named Andrew Bow, who is one of our uniform-wearing defenders of freedom (a young ROTC student, to be exact), was at a Greyhound bus station waiting for a bus. While there, he experienced some kind of debilitating seizure that put him on the ground and into convulsions. My own sister’s boyfriend died under similar circumstances, so I assure you Mr. Bow was in dire straits, and in need of immediate medical assistance.

Enter Frank White, a 33 year old man with so little capacity for human compassion that it is hard to describe him without literally comparing him to a mollusk. Allegedly, (come on, they’ve got the whole thing on video) Frank thought this would be a good opportunity to rob the young man of his wallet. So he did.

I could not find any information online to indicate whether Frank White tried to lend a hand at any point, but by the accounts I have been able to dig up, he didn’t. He simply walked over to a man in trouble and took his wallet. This is simply disgusting human behavior. I didn’t really want to qualify Frank as an Arrogant Jerk, because in most cases being one implies that there is a sense of superiority on the part of the offending Jerk.

Frank White demonstrates to me that you do not have to be a pious upper statesman to exude Arrogance. Frank’s complete and utter disrespect for human suffering shows that he considers his fellow being to be beneath him. So much so that pain and suffering were given second consideration to scoring a quick buck or two. Literally; our soldier could not have had more than a few bucks in his wallet.

Fortunately, the entire thing was caught on video, and Frank White will get to spend a little time in the slammer for being such a Jerk. Stealing someone’s wallet is a low life crime. Doing it while the victim is in need of medical help deserves some special attention from the courts. This guy needs to do some hard time at a labor camp working for one of those loudmouthed chain gain bosses who thinks he can work a man straight.

It is a shame we have to share our air with these kind of people. I hope Andrew is doing all right.
